2012 Tesio Stakes Nominations – Moonee Valley Racing

While the attention at Moonee Valley on Saturday will be firmly focused on the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) another quality event on the card for the mares will be the Tesio Stakes 2012, known this year as the Trojan Hand Tools Stakes.

Skyerush is one of the top-rated 2012 Tesio Stakes nominations

A total of 15 hopefuls were nominated for the $150,000 Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) this year, the top-rated of which is Roger James’ Kiwi raider Silent Achiever.

The four-year-old O’Reilly mare boasts an outstanding record of five wins and three minor placings from 10 starts, including the Group 1 New Zealand Derby over the mile and a half back in March.

Silent Achiever is yet to race in Melbourne but she does have experience down under in Sydney having run a brave third when defeated under a half-length by Laser Hawk in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) this autumn before her disappointing sixth in the Australian Derby.

She resumed on October 5 back home at Te Rapa running a close fourth over 1400m at Te Rapa and has also been nominated for the $220,000 Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) on Cox Plate Day.

Meanwhile three other highly-rated Tesio Stakes nominees for 2012 whose jockeys have been confirmed are Aaron Purcell’s surprise Toorak Handicap runner-up Spirit Song to be ridden by Brad Rawiller, Hugh Bowman’s Group 1 performing mount Skyerush from the stables of Guy Walter, and another Kiwi galloper in Zurella who will have top New Zealand hoop James McDonald in the saddle as the NZ Oaks runner-up looks to improve on their 13th in the Turnbull Stakes.

Meanwhile there are three last-start winners nominated for the race with the Mark Kavanagh-trained Midnight Martnini who won the Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) by three lengths on October 14, Star Of Giselle out for her third on the trot and Peter Moody’s Rock Hit coming off a win over the Moonee Valley mile.

Check out the official 2012 Trojan Hand Tools Stakes nominations in the table below, acceptances for which are due out on Wednesday.
