The much awaited Cox Plate Carnival kicks off under the lights at Moonee Valley this Friday night for Manikato Stakes Night, one of the key support races on the program being the 2012 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic.
This year 16 three-year-old fillies have been nominated for the $220,000 Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m), a race that can be used as a stepping stone towards some of the major Melbourne Cup Carnival features for the females.
Both the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day or the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) five days later on Thursday November 8 are a possibility for the Fillies Classic contenders in 2012.
The most notable 2012 Crown Oaks-bound filly nominated for the Fillies Classic this year meanwhile is Love For Ransom, the Greg Eurell-trained daughter of Red Ransom paying $14 in the Crown Oaks odds at bookmaker.com.au.
Love For Ransom is set to appreciate the step back in class on Friday night having run seventh to Commanding Jewel in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield last time out on October 17.
Other Crown Oaks hopes entered in the Fillies Classic include the Anthony Freedman-trained Morphettville Guineas third placegetter Kazanluk, who is also by Red Ransom, and Balaclava Lady coming off a ninth in the Thousand Guineas who pay $51 and $61 respectively in the Crown Oaks betting markets.
Also featuring in the Fillies Classic 2012 nominations are the likes of Kazanluk’s stablemate Flirtatious, the Peter Moody-trained Mareeza who ran a close second to Cavalry Rose in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 13, and the lightly-raced John O’Shea-trained Zabeel filly Zuzichka who is the only last start winner in the mix having saluted over 1500m at Hawkesbury on October 7 at just her second career run.
Another bunch of three-year-old fillies will also be running in the $120,000 Listed William Crockett Stakes (1200m) at the meeting on Friday night, the race attracting 16 early entries including Gerald Ryan’s Thoroughbred Club Stakes winner Cavalry Rose and the Anthony Cummings-trained Agueda.
