Dunaden Cops 1kg Melbourne Cup Weight Penalty

The extraordinary Caulfield Cup winning effort from reigning Melbourne Cup champ Dunaden has earned the French-trained champion a 1kg weight penalty for their 2012 Melbourne Cup bid next month.

  • Dunaden awarded 1kg weight penalty for Caulfield Cup win
  • Will now carry 59kg in the 2012 Melbourne Cup
  • That is 4.5kg more than what they carried to victory in last year’s Melbourne Cup
  • Remain the $7 Melbourne Cup betting favourite at bookmaker.com.au despite the impost
  • Out to become sixth multiple Melbourne Cup winner in history
  • No horse since the metric system was introduced in 1972 has carried more than 58.5kg to a Melbourne Cup win
  • Only horses to carry more than 57kg since 1972 are Think Big (58.5kg in 1975) and Makybe Diva (58kg in 2005)
  • 16 horses have had 59kg or more on their back for the Melbourne Cup in the last 40 years – none have won

Mikel Delzangles’ flying Nicobar six-year-old carried 58kg to victory in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) first-up on Saturday, a superlative ride from last year’s winning jockey Craig Williams seeing Dunaden become the first original top-weight to continue on and take out the mile-and-a-half classic.

Dunaden

Dunaden will carry the 59kg topweight in the 2012 Melbourne Cup

They broke the records for their Caulfield Cup victory and now Duanden faces their toughest test to date when they carry a total of 59kg when defending their crown in the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday November 6, 2012.

“He is an incredible horse and broke all sort of records to win on Saturday,” stable representative Geoffrey Faber said of Dunaden.

“He will have to break records again in the Melbourne Cup if he is to win it but I wouldn’t count him out from doing it.”

Out to become just the sixth horse in history to post multiple Melbourne Cup victories Dunaden will have to break a metric weight carrying record to do so.

Since the metric system came into effect for the Melbourne Cup back in 1972, no horse has carried more than 58.5kg to victory.

In fact from 1972 to the present day the only two horses to carry more than 57kg to a Melbourne Cup win were Think Big (58.5kg in 1975), who also won the 1974 Cup, and triple Melbourne Cup champ Makybe Diva (58kg) for her third win in 2005.

Dunaden will become the 17th horse in the past 40 years to carry 59kg or more in a Melbourne Cup field, connections hoping they can do what the likes of Gunsynd, Kingston Town, Better Loosen Up, Super Impose, Vintage Crop, Vinnie Roe and Yeats have failed to do and win with the weight.

While the history is certainly imposing surrounding Dunaden’s 59kg, 4.5kg more than the weight they had on their back for their Melbourne Cup win 12 months ago, Racing Victoria’s chief handicap Greg Carpenter said they were deserving of the 1kg.

“Dunaden again proved himself one of the most gifted 2400-metre horses in the world on Saturday winning the BMW Caulfield Cup with 58kg in what was an outstanding performance,” Carpenter said.

“Given the quality of field he beat and the manner in which he won the race the victory demanded a review of his Emirates Melbourne Cup handicap and I have penalised him 1kg thus rising to 59kg.

“I am aware however that a new challenge awaits him in the Melbourne Cup with horses of the calibre of Mount Athos (54kg), Galileo’s Choice (53.5kg), Green Moon (53.5kg), Mourayan (53.5kg), Tac De Boistron (53.5kg) and Brigantin (53kg) all having elected not to run at Caulfield.

“His arch rival Red Cadeaux (runner-up in last year’s Melbourne Cup) comes into the race with 55.5kg and Dunaden, with his 59kg, now meets that horse 2.5kg worse than he did in their epic finish to last year’s race.

“In terms of distance in a 3200-metre contest 1kg is considered to be the equivalent of almost 2 lengths.”

Despite their weight Dunaden’s weekend victory has ensured they sit on top of the Melbourne Cup odds at bookies around the country including at bookmaker.com.au who have them at $7 to become the 12th horse in history to complete the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double in a single season, the first since Ethereal (2001).

“Only Rising Fast in 1955 with 9st 5lb has carried a weight rivaling the 59kg allocated to Dunaden when completing the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double,” Carpenter added.

Originally the equal 58kg topweight for the Melbourne Cup with 2010 winner Americain, they will now carry a full kilo more than the fellow French star who is now the $8 second pick in the Melbourne Cup betting markets after an impressive fourth in the Caulfield Cup.

Following Duanden and Americain in the Melbourne Cup weights are then non-acceptor Manighar (57kg) who is out with injury, Red Cadeaux (55.5kg), Jakkalberry (55.5kg) and Winchester (55.5kg).
