Race 7 Results – Lightinthenite Wins 2012 David Jones Cup

Lightinthenite has taken out the Group 3 David Jones Cup at Caulfield Racecourse today October 20, 2012.

The five-year-old  proved too good for his competitors in the $150,000 race, where he was the $2.60 favourite at bookmaker.com.au.

Bagman, who looked the winner a furlong out from the line, was forced to be content with second while Extra Zero finished in third place.

Trainer John O’Shea was at the track to witness Lightinthenite win the 2012 David Jones Cup.

“He likes to win and he attacks the line,” O’Shea said.

“He’s got a good turn of foot.

“He was strong through the line.

“It’s a nice start for him, his first go at a bit of a trip.”

O’Shea is hopeful Lighinthenite can continue to improve enough to run in the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup, instead of the David Jones Cup, in 2013.

“We’d love to be here next year hopefully running in the major event,” he said.

Jockey Craig Williams also touched on the chances of Lightinthenite running in the prestigious Melbourne Cup next near as a six-year-old.

“They’re very confident he’ll be here next year (on the) first Tuesday in November,” Williams said.

Willaims was forced to wait for a run to open up in the final stages of the race, with Lightinthenight initially stuck behind a wall of horses.

“I knew I had a nice horse going into it,” Williams said.

“When he got to the front he actually switched off.

“He’s a lovely horse and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

Lightinthenite has now won six of his 13 race starts and has earned more than $330,000 in prize money.
