Crafty Irna Wins Tattersalls Club Cup 2012 – Results

Ron Quinton’s quality staying mare Crafty Irna has earned the chance to continue onto a Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a smart Sydney win in the 2012 City Tattersalls Club Cup.

Originally earmarked for the paddock after running in the $100,000 Listed City Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick, the Starcraft five-year-old is now likely to remain in work targeting the spring riches in Victoria.

Dropping well back in class today after finishing eight lengths away eighth to beaten Caulfield Cup favourite Glencadam Gold in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) last time out, Crafty Irna was able to prove her worth and snare her second stakes success.

Overcoming a wide barrier 11 draw, Crafty Irna took out the Tattersalls Club Cup as a $14 chance thanks in part to a lovely ride from apprentice hoop Sam Clipperton.

“I told him (Clipperton) before the race ‘you’ve drawn awkward and you’re going to need a lot of luck son’,” Quinton said.

“What a great result.”

There was even more value in the winning City Tattersalls City Club Cup quinella with a much improved effort from former Group 1 winner The Verminator who was only a short half-head away second as a $41 roughie.

In a photo finish Gai Waterhouse’s 58kg topweight Western Symbol ($5.50), who had a nice trouble free run settled fourth as they approached the corner at the top of the track, was the same distance away again in third.

Race favourite Dare To Dream ($2.80) who was out to earn a 2012 Melbourne Cup bid missed the start and came out last eventually finishing over four and a half lengths back in seventh.

The Chris Waller-trained The Verminator was driven hard form a wide alley by jockey Joshua Parr and went for the lead eventually setting just off Waterhouse’s veteran stayer Herculian Prince who was fired up and tugging for the reign in front.

Crafty Irna had no luck early and couldn’t get a clear run but got up into second out wide before she got the lead with 100m to go.

It was a blanket finish but the photo revealed the mare had got there on the inside by the bob of a head, Western Symbol, who had improvement in them having come again to hold in for their minor placing after looking out of it, on the outside in third with The Verminator splitting them.

“She jumped real well, straight forward, just got into a bit of trouble around the first turn,” Clipperton said.

“To be honest I thought I got beaten.

“But to her credit she stuck in there…she done a good job (sic).”

If she pulls up well the new plan is now to take Crafty Irna, a winner of four of her 25 career starts to date, to Melbourne for the $250,000 Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on the last day of the Melbourne Cup CarnivalEmirates Stakes Day, Saturday November 11, 2012.

“She’s had a great prep,” Walter said of Crafty Irna.

“She was going to the paddock.

“But the Matriarch Stakes on the last day, that’s an option.

“We’ll sit down and have a think.”
