David Jones Cup 2012 – Preview and Tips

All the talk this week has been about the Caulfield Cup and rightfully so but there are number of quality support races on the card including the Group 3 2012 David Jones Cup (2000m).

Ten horses will contest the the David Jones Cup with the field containing a mixture of both emerging and experienced stayers as well as locals and imports.

Current favourite is Lightinthenite ($2.80) from the John O’Shea stable who is followed by Prairie Star ($6.50), Waterford Hill ($7.00), Maules Creek ($7.00) and Bagman ($8.50).

The Races.com.au team have studied the David Jones Cup form carefully so keep reading for our very best selections.

The Winner

#5 Lightinthenite $2.80

This lightly-raced gelding looks a good prospect and has shown that a win is not too far away with previous starts this spring.

Flew home to finish second in the Cameron Handicap first-up before running fourth to Fat Al in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap.

Has always been hitting the line and should appreciate the rise to 2000m this weekend.

The Placings

#2 Bagman $8.50 and #8 Dame Claire $14.00

Bagman is rock-hard fit, a consistent gelding who always gives his all. Placed behind Southern Speed in the Penny Edition Stakes in August and has since recorded two wins at Listed level and a fifth in the Cranbourne Cup.

$14.00 seems value for Dame Claire who is one of the form horses in the field. Won the Listed Ansett Classic at Mornington last month and backed it up with a third to Tanby in The Bart Cummings.
