2012 Moonga Stakes Tips & Betting Selections

While not holding quite the same amount of pulling power as the Caulfield Cup, the Moonga Stakes 2012 at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday is still a super spring showdown to check out, our exclusive betting selections and tips for the clash detailed below.

King's Rose

King's Rose is the Races.com.au tip to win the Moonga Stakes 2012 on Caulfield Cup Day

Jumping at 2:00pm (AEST) as Caulfield Race 5, the $150,000 Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) originally drew a final field of 13 gallopers but the field has since been reduced to 12 following the early scratching of topweight Torio’s Quest.

Moonga Stakes betting markets at bookmaker.com.au are firmly led by the Peter Moody-trained King’s Rose who has been wound into $2.10 to win her first race since the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) in September last year.

She ran an excellent first-up second in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) last time out and from barrier eight on Saturday looks ready to break her winning drought.

King’s Rose’s main dangers according to the Moonga Stakes odds are then the Peter Snowden-trained Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Galah ($7.50) and Roger James’ consistent Kiwi mare Full Of Spirit ($8).

So do the Races.com.au Moonga Stakes tips come from this top trio? Or are we tipping an upset with one of the longer priced hopefuls such as the rails-drawn Amah Rock ($11) or Stradbroke Handicap third placegetter Happy Zero ($10)?

2012 Moonga Stakes Trifecta Tip

#5 King’s Rose ($2.10) from #6 Amah Rock ($11) and #4 Galah ($7.50)

  • King’s Rose is hard to go past for the win. Her second in the Gilgai was brave and she should have cone on since then. Her second-up record is good (4-2-0-1) and this is the right track (2-1-1-0) and distance (3-2-0-0) – the stats stack up in her favour.
  • Amah Rock adds a bit of value to the trifecta here, the Fastnet Rock four-year-old coming off a nice third to Fawkner in the Listed Tavern Stakes over this distance at Flemington and should get the run of the race from the inside alley if ridden right by big race specialist Glen Boss. She also has a prevous win over this track and distance from April when carrying 58.5kg.
  • Galah not without their claims from gate nine. They resumed last start when fourth in the Gilgai with improvement pending. Their second-up record is imposing (3-2-0-0) and they are also a stakes winner on Caulfield Cup Day over the 1400m last year.
