Callanish Heads 2012 Seymour Cup Field

Unbeaten four-year-old Callanish will be chasing an eighth consecutive victory when he lines up for his first stakes test in the Listed 2012 Seymour Cup (1600m) on Sunday.

Since debuting in December, the Mick Price-trained gelding has been a dominant performer with all but one of his victories coming at margins of a length or more.

He had his first start in a weekend metropolitan race at Caulfield on September 30 where he defeated Saturday’s Toorak Handicap runner-up Spirit Song by four lengths.

Third on that day at Caulfield was Midnight Martini who has further enforced Callanish’s form by winning the Cranbourne Cup on Sunday.

Price is confident he can keep his unbeaten record alive this weekend despite it being the sixth start of a campaign that began in July.

“The three weeks between runs has been excellent for him, I’m very happy with and looking forward to the race,” Price said.

The most likely danger to upsetting Callanish’s record in the Seymour Cup is Amah Rock but he may not line up as trainer Peter Morgan has also accepted for the Moonga Stakes on Saturday.

The four-year-old has had three starts this spring which have included a photo-finish runner-up in the Listed Chandler Macleod Stakes and a third in the Listed Tavern Stakes.

Also stepping out in the Seymour Cup is Darren Weir-trained gelding Lord Of Brazil who is chasing a third consecutive victory after winning the Mildura Cup and the Gold Nugget at Ballarat.

Other Seymour Cup runners include recent Caulfield placegetter Tribal Rock and the Darley-owned Launay.
