Thousand Guineas 2012 – Betting Tips

It’s spring, which means Group 1 racing midweek and today all eyes are on Caulfield for the 2012 Thousand Guineas (1600m) which will test some of the best three-year-old fillies in the country.

In previous years there have been standout fillies, such as last year when Atlantic Jewel was dominant, but this year sees a big, open field line up to chase top billings in the $500,000 event.

Currently topping the betting market is Adelaide filly Molto Bene ($4.00), with the next best Love For Ransom ($8.00) and Maybe Discreet ($8.00).

But the market is wide open, with a number of other runners falling around the $10.00 mark including Commanding Jewel ($9.00), Lady Of Harrods ($10.00), Longport ($10.00) and Dear Demi ($12.00).

Not sure who to back in this exciting betting race? Don’t worry, keep reading as the hard work has been done for you by the experts.

The Winner

#2 Longport $10.00

Has been flying in Sydney of late, winning the Tea Rose Stakes ahead of Norzita in a protest before going down to the Bart Cummings-trained filly in the Flight Stakes.

Norzita would probably have started as favourite here if she hadn’t been ruled out with injury so we are keen to go on that form line.

The daughter of Casino Prince has won three of six starts and placed on another two occasions, a terrific strike rate and at $10.00 offers plenty of value.

The Placings

#5 Members Joy $11.00 and #9 Molto Bene $4.00

There was a query about how Members Joy would handle the mile but that was quashed in the Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) when she flew home to claim runner-up honours.

A promising filly who won at stakes level earlier this month and with luck in running will be flying home.

Molto Bene is another who will be running on quickly as she has shown in all her previous outings.

Young trainer Will Clarken set her for this race a long time ago and she was the eye-catcher in the Thousand Guineas Prelude when making up plenty of ground to finish third.
