Norman Robinson Stakes 2012 Field Features Derby Hopefuls

A small but exciting field has been announced for the Group 3 2012 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m), which stands as a lead-up event to next month’s Group 1 2012 Victoria Derby.

Philippi will be out to keep his unbeaten record alive in the Norman Robinson Stakes

Nine horses will contest the $150,000 event including a number of runners who have already signalled potential as derby contenders.

Included among that is Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding Kabayan who will carry the topweight of 58kg after an impressive victory in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes at Rosehill last month.

Stepping up in class is the lightly-raced Philippi, who remains unbeaten after three career starts.

The chestnut colt signalled his potential for a Derby campaign in his first two starts and confirmed it earlier this month when producing a strong finish to win the Listed UCI Stakes.

One of the more experienced runners in the field is South Australian colt Jimando who has won three times and placed on another three occasions from eight starts.

The Tony McEvoy-trained son of Commands finished fourth in the Blue Diamond Stakes as a two-year-old and has picked up where he left off to win his first two starts of the spring and finish third in both the Bill Stutt Stakes and the UCI Stakes.

Also showing plenty of promise in the early stages of his career is the Peter Gelagotis-trained Hvasstan who has won twice and not finished worse than fourth in five starts since debuting in August.

A son of Fastnet Rock, Hvasstan won the Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1700m) at Caulfield last month before running second to Philippi in the UCI Stakes.

Other Norman Robinson Stakes runners include the David Payne-trained Honorius and last-start winner Electric Fusion.

Give yourself access to great odds when betting this spring by signing up at, home of the $400 bonus bet offer!

The best thing about the bonus is that it can be split up to four ways, allowing you to have a $100 free bet on four different spring features.
