Thousand Guineas 2012 – Final Field and Barriers Released

A classy field has been announced to contest the Group 1 2012 Thousand Guineas (1600m) which will take place at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Lady Of Harrods

Lady Of Harrods is one of a number of in-form horses contesting the Thousand Guineas

A full allotment of 16 horses plus two emergencies have accepted for the $500,000 three-year-old fillies’ feature, a race that has previously won by star horses such as Atlantic Jewel and Miss Finland.

There is no shortage of in-form horses in the field including Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Lady Of Harrods who has drawn favourably in barrier three.

The Russell Cameron-trained filly will be chasing a third consecutive win after also beating Kabayan to win the McNeil Stakes last month.

Also chasing a third consecutive win is Adelaide’s Maybe Discreet who backed up a dominant win in the Morphetville Guineas to take out the Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington on October 6.

There is a strong Adelaide presence in the Thousand Guineas, with Maybe Discreet joined by the Will Clarken-trained Molto Bene and John Hyam’s Stella Lante.

Molto Bene has always been considered among the top fancies for the Thousand Guineas and showed why in the Thousand Guineas Prelude when producing an eye-catching run to finish half a length from Lady Of Harrods in third.

Second in the Thousand Guineas Prelude was highly-rated filly Commanding Jewel who backed that performance up to finish third in the Edward Manifold Stakes.

Also in solid form is Members Joy who won the Cap D’Antibes Stakes early last month before a luckless fifth in the Thousand Guineas Prelude was backed up with a fast-finishing second in the Edward Manifold Stakes.

The Bart Cummings-trained Norzita may be out of the spring but there are still some decent fillies travelling down from Sydney including Clarry Conners’ Dear Demi and the Patinack-owned Longport.

Dear Demi has been consistent throughout the early part of the spring, winning the Furious Stakes and finishing fourth and third in the Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes respectively.

Longport took top honours ahead of Norzita in the Tea Rose Stakes before finishing runner-up in the Flight Stakes.

Other noteable acceptances include one-time favourite Love For Ransom and last-start winner Balaclava Lady.
