2012 Melbourne Cup Hopes Run at Randwick

This Saturday a number of genuine Melbourne Cup 2012 hopefuls will have their latest run in Sydney facing off in the $100,000 Listed City Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick as they look to make the cut for the world’s richest handicap.

Maluckyday will head towards the 2012 Melbourne Cup via Saturday's Tatts Club Cup in Sydney

The 2012 City Tattersalls Club Cup is an alternative mile and a half handicap to the $2.65 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) running in Melbourne this weekend, eight of the 19 Tatts Club Cup nominees heading towards the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday November 6.

The most notable of these is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Maluckyday.

Currently sitting 15th on the Melbourne Cup order of entry and well assured of a start in the ‘race that stops a nation’ the Zabeel six-year-old was last seen finishing a good second to Tanby in the Listed The Bart Cummings (2520m) when defeated just a length on October 6.

Runner-up to Americain in the 2010 Melbourne Cup the gelding is currently rated a $21 chance in the Melbourne Cup betting markets for this year’s showdown at bookmaker.com.au, a price that is sure to firm if they run away with Saturday’s race.

They face a tough task however as the equal 60.5kg topweight for the Tattersalls Club Cup giving plenty of weight to some class rivals.

It is Maluckyday’s stablemate Niwot who is also on 60.5kg in the race, the Galileo eight-year-old racing for the fourth time this season.

The best finishing of the Australian-trained horses in last year’s Melbourne Cup when four lengths away eighth to Dunaden, Niwot went on to win the Sydney Cup over the two miles at Randwick during April.

They were most recently seen crossing four lengths away eighth to Green Moon in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and are set to improve as they get up in distance on Saturday, Niwot 18th in the Melbourne Cup ballot and a $41 chance in the Melbourne Cup odds.

The next shortest-priced of the City Tattersalls Club Cup entries in the Melbourne Cup markets is then $61 shot Dare To Dream.

The Bart Cummings-trained Danehill Dancer four-year-old is yet to pass the first ballot clause for the Cup sitting 64th (of 67), but a win on Saturday will see the imported stallion move up the order of entry.

Dare To Dream has had two runs down under since joining the Cups King’s operation, their most recent effort being a close third when beaten just over half a length by Mourayan in the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick on October 6 when carrying 59kg; they drop back to the 54kg minimum on Saturday.

Cummings has also nominated for Pendragon mare Blazing Dragon who was last seen winning a 2200m Benchmark 75 at Warwick Farm on October 10, Saturday to be the four-year-olds’ first test in black type company.

Other notable 2012 City Tattersalls Club Cup hopes include Gai Waterhouse’s Craven Plate runner-up Western Symbol, the Chris Waller-trained Permit, consistent six-year-old Saint Encosta, Ben Ahrens’ Beaudesert galloper Spechenka and country cups performer They Won’t Last.
