Norzita Out of 2012 Thousand Guineas

Clear favourite for Wednesday’s Thousand Guineas 2012 at Caulfield, Bart Cummings’ Flight Stakes winning filly Norzita has been withdrawn from the race and ruled out of the remainder of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The Thorn Park three-year-old pulled up lackluster have a track gallop this morning, maestro trainer Cummings making the decision then and there to spell Norzita immediately and send her to the paddock to recover ahead of an autumn return.

A winner of two of her six starts to date for $350,000 in prize money, Norzita was topping all the markets for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 17 after her impressive two and a half length victory in the Group 1 Flight Stakes over the Randwick mile last weekend – Cummings 265th Group 1 win.

In Norzita’s absence the Thousand Guineas betting markets have been blown wide open with Atlantic Jewel’s three-quarter sister Commanding Jewel the narrow favourite.

Leon Corsten’s nicely-bred Commands filly won her opening two career starts in August before her close second to Lady Of Harrods in the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) in September.

She was last seen third as the beaten favourite in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m), her first look at the mile, when defeated under half a length by Maybe Discreet.

It is then a logjam of fillies fighting for second spot in the Thousand Guineas odds with the Greg Eurell-trained Love For Ransom who is yet to race over further than 1400m or at stakes level, smart Adeladie filly Molto Bene last seen running third in the Thousand Guineas Prelude, and fellow Morphettville-based hopeful Maybe Discreet who won the Edward Manifold all in the mix.
