Caulfield Guineas Day Tips 2012

Today the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival action really starts to heat up as punters gear up for the majors starting next weekend with nine quality races including a Group 1 triple on the cards, the crew’s exclusive betting tips on the complete 2012 Caulfield Guineas Day program listed below.

Value may be hard to find in some of today’s headline events with the likes of Underwood Stakes winner Ocean Park (Caulfield Stakes) and Gai Waterhouse’s undefeated turf star Pierro (Caulfield Guineas) odds-on in their markets, but that doesn’t mean the betting action is stagnant.

Betting on this Cox Plate-bound duo is better than bank interest and the punters are coming for them hard and fast at

Whether you want to enjoy a punt on a young superstar like Pierro or to get behind their champion older stablemate More Joyous as she attempts to create a weight-carrying record in the Toorak Handicap there is a race and a galloper for everyone to back at Caulfield today.

There is also a chance of a track downgrade too with overcast skies and weather forecasts threatening rain to fall on the current Dead (4) course causing a possible few Caulfield Guineas Day upsets.

Here and now is when the big names of the spring are out in force preparing for their grand finals over the coming weeks so if you follow our below Caulfield Guineas Day tips then you could enjoy a nice day in the winners’ circle getting your ‘punt bank’ nice and full for the next few weekends of top class racing action.

Race 1 – 12:30pm – $120,000 Listed BMW Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m)

  • 1st – #2 Smokin Joey ($3.50)
  • 2nd – #3 Speediness ($8.50)
  • 3rd – #1 Parthian ($21)

Smokin Joey ran a good fifth last time out in the Group 1 Sir Rupert (beaten four lengths) and will enjoy dropping back in class for their second look at the track and distance on the trot. Speediness also drops back in class following two credible Group 3 finishes most recently fourth (beaten three lengths) in the Bill Ritchie, haven’t seen Caulfield for a year but third-up should have the fitness. Parthian adds value, the distance is ideal and will like a bit of rain, winner over the track and distance back in Feb.

Race 2 – 1:05pm – $250,000 Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire (1200m)

  • 1st – #1 Sizzling ($4.40)
  • 2nd – # 10 Snitzerland ($1.80)
  • 3rd – #5 Lankan Rupee ($5)

Read why the team are tipping the Queenslander Sizzling to upset odds-on favourite Snitzerland in our Blue Sapphire 2012 Betting Odds & Tips post.

Race 3 – 1:40pm – $150,000 Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m)

  • 1st – #8 Saturn Rock ($4)
  • 2nd – #2 Hoss Amor ($3.40)
  • 3rd – #1 Snipzu ($31)

Predicting a tight finish between the top two, Saturn Rock just looks to have the most improvement and the fitness edge after a good third in a Group 3 at the Valley last time out. Hoss Amor second-up after a second in the same race with improvement to come. Snipzu over the odds for mine, down from Queensland with good form there and the right gate here.

Race 4 – 2:15pm – $220,000 Group 2 Schweppes Schillaci Stakes (1000m)

  • 1st – #1 Buffering ($2.25)
  • 2nd – #4 Pampleonne ($7)
  • 3rd – #2 Temple Of Boom ($9)

We are sticking with the favourite Buffering despite some concerns over the track, read more in our detailed Schillaci Stakes 2012 Tips & Betting Preview.

Race 5 – 2:50pm – $400,000 Group 1 Cathay Pacific Caulfield Stakes (2000m)

  • 1st – #6 Ocean Park ($1.45)
  • 2nd – #2 Sincero ($4.40)
  • 3rd – #3 Sanagas ($26)

All the rage is Kiwi galloper Ocean Park and while they are odds-on and firming we are happy to take this price they really are the pick here. More details on them and the minor place picks in our Caulfield Stakes 2012 Tips & Selections article.

Race 6 – 3:30pm – $400,000 Group 1 David Jones Rose Clinic Toorak Handicap (1600m)

  • 1st – #1 More Joyous ($2.30)
  • 2nd – #2 King Mufhasa ($9)
  • 3rd -#7 Solzhenitsyn ($4.40)

Read why we think More Joyous can make history with a win here in our exclusive Toorak Handicap Betting Tips 2012 post.

Race 7 – 4:10pm – $1,000,000 Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m)

  • 1st – #1 Pierro ($1.22)
  • 2nd – #2 Epaulette ($9)
  • 3rd – #8 Let Go Lenni ($31)

If you really need to read reasons to get behind this superstar then ready our 2012 Caulfield Guineas Tips & Betting Exotics article.

Race 8 – 4:50pm – $22,000 Group 2 Sportingbet Herbert Power Stakes (2400m)

  • 1st – #2 Gatewood ($3.30)
  • 2nd – #4 Shahwardi ($12)
  • 3rd – #8 Exceptionally ($5.50)

This is a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption race and the internationals looks set to steal the show. Ready more in our 2012 Herbert Power Stakes Tips & Selections post.

Race 9 – 5:30pm – $120,000 Listed Sportingbet Sprint Series Final (1200m)

  • 1st – #3 Detours ($5)
  • 2nd – #4 Miss Marx ($6)
  • 3rd – #8 Dream Face ($6)

Detours has the right draw here and was impressive last time out when the first-up winner of the Group 3 heat by two lengths after overcoming barrier 10 of 12. Miss Marx also a last start winner at the track at stakes level (Testa Rossa) from a horror gate. New trainer Peter Moody has Dream Face flying with two wins since joining him in September, both at Caulfield.
