Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This weekend after the action of Caulfield Guineas Day on Saturday, Sunday’s headline event is also in Melbourne with the Cranbourne Cup 2012.
Due to run as Cranbourne Race 8 at 3:58pm (AEST) the $200,000 Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) has this year drawn a capacity field of 16 starters plus an emergency with a relatively open market for the punters.
Current $5 favouirte in the Cranbourne Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au is Vatuvei, Peter Moody’s VRC St Leger winner withdrawn from the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on Saturday in favour of a run in this.
Moody must rate the Reset four-year-old a chance too as they would have faced just five rivals in the Caulfield Stakes compared to this big field.
There are then four other single figure fancies in the Cranbourne Cup betting markets with:
- #11 Destiny’s Kiss ($5.50) – Robert Smerdon-trained four-year-old in flying form having won five of their past six starts, last seen putting an easy six lengths on their rivals at Mornington over 2013m, right distance and conditions, great barrier (6) and jockey Dwayne Dunn
- #2 Bagman ($6.50) – Out for their third on the trot Mark Kavanagh’s Easy Rocking six-year-old shouts class and come off two black type victories back home in Adelaide, most recently in the Listed Tokyo City Cup (1800m), but must overcome the extreme outside barrier (17 into 16)
- #7 Midnight Martini ($6.50) – Street Cry mare also representing the Kavanagh stable, will have to work hard from barrier 14 but time to overcome the barrier, has good form around this time last year in Caulfield when third in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) and fourth in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m)
- #4 Miss Artistic ($9) – NZ Oaks winner hasn’t looked to come on this time in as a four-year-old with two failed runs in Melbourne, but she was beaten by only three in the Group 3 JRA Cup over this distance at Moonee Valley on September 28, can improve
Other longer priced fancies that aren’t without a chance at a juicy price then include Tokyo City Cup runner-up Finiguerra ($11) and local Dash For Cash seven-year-old Boom ‘N’ Zoom ($11) with the home track advantage.
