Schillaci Stakes 2012 Tips & Betting Preview

One of the early Group features on a bumper Caulfield Guineas Day program at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday will be the 2012 Schillaci Stakes, the team’s insider betting tips and exotic selections for which are detailed below.

Buffering is the tip to win the 2012 Schillaci Stakes this Caulfield Guineas Day

Set to run as Caulfield Race 4 at 2:15pm (AEST) the $220,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) has this year drawn a final field of 10 smart sprinters.

Short-priced favourites in the Schillaci Stakes odds at currently paying $2.40 is Queensland raider Buffering, a regular in the Group 1 sprint scene all over Australia.

Drawn in barrier seven the five-year-old Rob Heathcote-trained Mossman gelding resumed on September 28, having previously run second in both the Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane during the winter, with a close first-up win in the Group 2 AJ Moir Stakes (1200im) at Moonee Valley.

They drop back to 1000m for the Schillaci in their first run at Caulfield since their disappointing debut at the track when sixth to Sepoy in the Caulfield Sprint (1100m) this time last spring.

Buffering remains the clear favourite as they prepare for the upcoming Manikato Stakes at the end of the month during the Cox Plate Carnival but there are some concerns over the track and the drop back to the 1000m.

“There’s a little concern, being 1000 metres,” Heathcote’s travelling rep Melissa Leitch said.

“If it had been 1100 or 1200, Rob and myself would have been quite confident.

“He’s a little bit vulnerable, maybe, but I think his class will pull him through.

“He’s 100 per cent sound and he’s a tough little fellow, you couldn’t ask for much more.”

There are then three other single figure chances in the Schillaci Stakes betting markets with last-start The Shorts winner Pampelonne ($6.50), the Peter Moody-trained Golden Archer ($6.50) who is tipped to bounce back after a close fourth in the McEwen Stakes last month at the Valley, and Robert Smerdon’s progressive mare Lone Rock ($8) on the rails with barrier one.

But does the horse has rated special to win come from inside this top four? Or are we tipping a major upset Schillaci Stakes result with the likes of resuming Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom ($11) or the Anthony Freedman-trained veteran First Command ($12) to take out the feature first-up.

2012 Schillaci Stakes Trifecta Tip

#1 Buffering ($2.40) from #4 Pampelonne ($6.50) and #2 Temple Of Boom ($11)

  • Buffering is the rank horse here and the deserved favourite with more than a few Group 1 places to his name. Queries over the track but they come off a good win and have a credible second-up record (5-1-2-1). Two wins and a third over this distance and think they will have their measure. Can handle if the rain comes with a good Slow (2-1-0-0) and Heavy (3-2-1-0) track record.
  • Pampelonne boasts the best Win Rate (62.50%) and Place Percentage (87.50%) of this field so are hard to go past in the Quinella. They also come off a first-up win having narrowly held on after a horror barrier (14 of 16) to win the Group 2 The Shorts (1200m) at Randwick on September 22. They go well second-up too (2-1-1-0) but have never seen this track or distance. Still they are ultra-consistent and with Corey Brown in barrier four are right in this.
  • Temple Of Boom is a Group 1 winner from the autumn (The Galaxy over 1100m) and so has undeniable class. Haven’t run since their fifth in the Stradbroke Handicap but go well fresh (7-4-1-0). Also the distance looks ideal first-up (9-5-1-1) so include in all exotics.
