A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Gerald Ryan’s classy filly Snitzerland is the odds-on favourite to take out this Saturday’s 2012 Blue Sapphire on Caulfield Guineas Day, the Golden Slipper runner-up out for her fourth Group win on the trot, but can she get the job done for the punters in Melbourne?
Due to jump as Race 2 at 1:05pm (AEST) the $250,000 Blue Sapphire (1200m) is the inaugural edition of the new three-year-olds race of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival that Racing Victoria hopes will gain Group 1 status over the coming years.
For the first Blue Sapphire a field of nine hopefuls is engaged to face off following the early scratching of #8 Gold Rory, Snitzel filly Snitzerland paying $1.90 in the bookmaker.com.au odds.
She has the draw (barrier four), the form having won all three of her races this season most recently the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 28, and the confidence of jockey Corey Brown who stays on.
“Gerald has her flying at the moment and from the draw she should get the perfect run,” Brown said of the Manikato Stakes-bound young gun.
There are then three other single figure chances in the Blue Sapphire betting markets with:
So is Snitzerland really the one to beat on Saturday? And what about the Blue Sapphire trifecta, is there a double figure outsider that has the right form to add value to the exotics?
2012 Blue Sapphire Trifecta Tip
#1 Sizzling from #10 Snitzerland and #5 Lankan Rupee
- Sizzling resumes racing after a Group 1 win in the TJ Smith, they make their interstate debut but are undefeated first-up (2-2-0-0), have a brilliant Win & Place rate of 88%, and their record over the distance is impressive (4-2-1-0). Need to come on as a three-year-old and overcome barrier eight but think they will surprise the favourite here.
- Snitzerland is in flying form and boasts the fitness edge here and she is also at her pet distance having won four of her six starts over 1200m. She goes well both ways of racing and is coming off back-to-back Melbourne wins over the distance. Gets in well with the weights and has the perfect draw. Hard to go past but think Sizzling might just get her on the line.
- Lanka Rupee is undefeated with two wins last month, the second of which was an eye-catching effort by two and a half at Caulfield. They see the 1200m for the first time but if they handle that and the class rise will be a top three chance for sure.
Roughie We Like
- #3 Fire Thunderbolt ($17): This Adelaide raider steps up in class and distance but is a genuine shot at surpassing expectations here. They won at Morphettville in the February debut before a big three length victory at Flemington over 1000m in March. They resume here and should go well fresh drawn one outside of Snitzerland with Craig Williams, aboard for their Flemington black-type during the autumn, aboard again.
