Queensland sprinter Buffering is a short-priced favourite to back up his first-up win in the Moir Stakes with victory in the Group 2 2012 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield this Saturday.
The five-year-old is a $2.60 chance at bookmaker.com.au to win what will be his final lead-up run before the Group 1 Manikato Stakes on October 26.
Drawn in barrier seven, trainer Robert Heathcote has confirmed the Mossman gelding has overcome any problems associated with the inoculations he received last week.
Outside of the multiple Group 1 placegetter the market is fairly even with a further three runners falling under double figures.
- Pamplelonne ($6.00): Lightly-raced four-year-old who got his spring off to a flyer with a win in in the Group 2 Shorts at Randwick. A talented gelding who has won five of eight starts.
- Golden Archer ($6.00): Trained by Peter Moody, the four-year-old was once considered a chance to head to Royal Ascot with Black Caviar before injury intervened. Has won two of four starts since returning from injury and not finished worse than fourth.
- Lone Rock ($7.50): Ran fourth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes in the autumn, the race in which Buffering finished third behind Foxwedge and Hay List. Then ran fourth to Black Caviar in the Robert Sangster Stakes. Having his first start of the spring.
- Temple Of Boom ($11.00): Queensland sprinter having his first start of the spring. Excelled in Melbourne last year but is having his first start at Caulfield on Saturday. Proved he was well and truly up to class when winning the Group 1 Galaxy at Randwick in the autumn.
Other Schillaci Stakes runners include last-start winner Snitzem ($13.00), Sydney flyer Didntcostalot ($21.00) and the Mick Price-trained Malasun ($41.00).
