Small But Strong 2012 Caulfield Staks Field Named

Just eight horses will contest the Group 1 2012 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on Saturday but it won’t be lacking any quality.

Manighar will look to turn the tables on Ocean park in the Caulfield Stakes

Included are three Group 1 winners who will all use the $400,000 weight-for-age race as a trial for the prestigious 2012 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 27.

Manighar will be out to get his spring back on track after a second-up sixth in the Underwood Stakes after previously finishing an unlucky second in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

Trainer Peter Moody is hoping he will follow a similar form pattern to the autumn where he produced his worst run of the preparation second-up before going on to score three Group 1 wins.

“It was second-up, and he was flat like that at his second-up run in the autumn when he ran his worst race,” Moody said.

“I’m happy with where he is at.”

The star import will try to turn the tables on New Zealand four-year-old Ocean Park who showed a sharp turn of foot when taking out the Underwood Stakes.

Trained by Gary Hennessy, Ocean Park first came to Australia in the autumn where he finished second in the Rosehill Guineas.

The other Group 1 winner in the field is Sincero who won the Memsie Stakes first-up before finishing fifth in the Underwood Stakes.

Purchased for $8000 as a yearling, the five-year-old has won 12 of 24 starts and collected nearly $1.7 million in prizemoney.

Joining the big three in the Caulfield Stakes are the Lloyd Williams-owned Midas Touch, former Melbourne Cup runner Alcopop, Bart Cummings’ import Sanagas, the lightly-raced Sabrage and Peter Moody-trained gelding Vatuvei.

Markets will open shortly for the Caulfield Stakes and the best place to back a winner is
