Anthony Freedman’s reigning Doomben Cup winner Mawingo has been sent to the paddock immediately and will not return this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Tertullian four-year-old suffering from a virus.
Mornignton-based Freedman ordered tests to be done on his Group 1 winning German import after Mawingo, who enjoyed a stellar campaign in Queensland during the winter winning the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) and running a good third to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m), after their two below par performances this time in.
They ran dead last upon resuming in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 8 when defeated by over eight lengths before their last start eighth behind Cox Plate-bound Ocean Park in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
Mawingo, who was to have run in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on Caulfield Guineas Day this Saturday, was found to have been suffering from a virus but is expected to make a full recovery before being bought back for the autumn riches.
“His past two runs were below par, but the blood tests failed to show up anything, but a recent test showed he has a virus in his system, which needs to be treated,” Freedman confirmed.
“At this stage of the spring, it is fruitless continuing.
“He can have the rest of the spring in a paddock, and we will bring him back in the autumn, along with Lucas Cranach, who is recovering well from his bone-chip operation.”
The stallion was nominated for all the spring majors but was not among the third acceptors for the $2.65 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) or the first declarations for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) yesterday.
