Full 2012 Herbert Power Stakes Field Revealed

A full field of 16 stayers vying for the Caulfield Cup ballot exemption has been accepted for the Herbert Power Stakes 2012 field on Caulfield Guineas Day in Melbourne this weekend.

Precedence will carry the topweight in the 2012 Herbert Power Stakes this Caulfield Guineas Day

Set to run as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:50pm the $220,000 Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) is one of three races on the Caulfield race program this Saturday offering a ballot free ride in the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20 to the winner.

Accordingly the Herbert Power Stakes field if full of spring cup potentials including the 58kg topweight Precedence.

The Bart Cummings-trained Zabeel seven-year-old races in their third Herbert Power having finished third in 2010 and 10th in 2009, Precedence needing to improve on their last start 10th in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) to be in the finish here.

JRA Cup winner Bianmick is also accepted for the Herbert Power Stakes this year, Michael Brady’s six-year-old galloper vying for their fourth straight win on the trot and their fifth from eight starts.

Bianmick only stepped out against black type company for the first time in the JRA Cup on September 28 at their 28th career start and they exceeded expectations beating home their rivals by a tidy one and three quarter lengths as a $20 outsider.

They go up from 54kg that run to 55.5kg for the Herbert Power and have drawn wide barrier 14 of 16.

Also coming via the JRA Cup are the likes of runner-up Dance With Her and third placed Ironstein.

David Brideoake & David Feek’s Al Maher mare Dance With Her enjoyed a great winter campaign in Brisbane, including her second to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m), and has had two runs this time in.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Ironstein meanwhile has had three runs leading up to Saturday, the Zabeel seven-year-old looking to win their first race since the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Adding an international flavor to this year’s Herbert Power Stakes field are two overseas-trained stayers with Shahwardi (13) and the John Gosden-trained Gatewood (barrier four) both making their Australian debuts.

Shahwardi is prepared by former Melbourne Cup winning trainer Alain De Royer Dupre (Americain, 2010) in France, the Lando gelding last seen running third in the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) back home on August 19.

They have been working strongly at Werribee since arriving down under including a searching gallop on Monday when ridden by Kerrin McEvoy.

Galileo stallion Gatewood meanwhile won’t be given a pre-Herbert Power Stakes gallop with connections happy with how they are coming along.

“He does not need to do much. I’m happy with him,” stable foreman Marcel Koren said.

Other notable Herbert Power Stakes hopefuls include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Reuben Percival (barrier 10) who ran a great third in The Metropolitan as a $60 roughie last Saturday, Naturalism Stakes third place-getter Exceptionally (barrier 15) with work to do from out wide, and the Robert Hickmott-trained Excluded (barrier nine).
