With the 2012 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival now in full swing, the battle for jockeys to secure rides and trainers to get the best hoop for their horse is also underway.
Yesterday a number of jockey appointments were made for the 2012 Caulfield Cup, with none more high profile than veteran Jim Cassidy being awarded the ride on favourite Glencadam Gold.
Cassidy takes over the mount from Tommy Berry who produced a terrific front-running ride on the Gai Waterhouse-trained import in the Metropolitan.
Cassidy said he was excited about the chance to ride Glencadam Gold, who became a standout Caulfield Cup favourite after his Metropolitan victory.
”He’s a great chance to win a Caulfield Cup and I’m just so pleased to be given the chance to ride one for Gai as she is just flying,” Cassidy said.
Glen Boss jumped off 2011 winner Southern Speed to chase the ride on Glencadam Gold with Southern Speed trainer Leon Macdonald moving quickly to secure the services of Nash Rawiller.
“I’m more than happy to have a rider of Nash’s calibre aboard,” Macdonald said.
“He’s won a Caulfield Cup before and is a great jockey.”
But it didn’t take long for Boss to find a ride in the prestigious staying race, with the high profile hoop to assume the mount on Peter Moody-trained import Sneak A Peek.
Glencadam Gold is currently the $4.50 favourite for the Caulfield Cup, with the only other single-figure chance in the pre-post market December Draw ($4.50).
Other strong Caulfield Cup chances include the Lloyd Williams-owned Seville ($11.00), 2011 Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden ($14.00) and Peter Moody-trained import Voila Ici.
