Buffering Heads Classy List of Sprinters – 2012 Schillaci Stakes Field

Queensland sprinter Buffering heads a quality 10-horse field announced to contest the Group 1 2012 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Buffering Heads the Schillaci Stakes field

The five-year-old has drawn barrier seven as he attempts to continue the impressive first-up form shown when winning the Group 2 Moir Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley two weeks ago.

It was a tough victory in the Moir Stakes as the son of Mossman hung on despite tiring in the dying stages and he will be ready to fire over the shorter trip this weekend.

But he faces a far tougher field than his first-up assignment, with one his main rivals a fellow Queenslander, Temple Of Boom.

Trained by Tony Gollan, Temple Of Boom was successful during last year’s Melbourne spring and delivered Gollan his first Group 1 win in the autumn in the Galaxy at Randwick.

Buffering is one of three last-start winners in the Schillaci Stakes field, with four-year-old Pampelonne coming off a win in the Group 2 Shorts and Snitzem rising in class after winning at Moonee Valley two weeks ago.

The Tim Martin-trained Pampelonne burst on to the scene as a three-year-old last year, winning his first start at Warwick Farm by two lengths and boasts an outstanding early career record of five wins from eight starts.

Snitzem, who is likely to challenge Buffering for the leader’s spot, is also lightly raced with three wins from eight career outings.

Black Caviar won this race last year and while she won’t be there this year Peter Moody will still have a runner with Golden Archer.

The four-year-old has been a picture of consistency since returning from injury in July, winning twice from four starts and finishing second in the Aurie’s Star Handicap.

Other Schillaci Stakes runners include Adelaide gelding Stirling Grove and the Marc Conners-trained Didntcostalot.
