Pierro Heads 24 Cox Plate 2012 Third Acceptances

Third declarations for the 2012 Cox Plate were taken by Racing Victoria today with Gai Waterhouse’s star four-year-old Pierro the short priced favourite of the 24 hopefuls still in contention for Australasia’s weight-for-age championship.

More Joyous

More Joyous is one of four 2012 Cox Plate third acceptors for Gai Waterhouse

Running on Saturday October 27 the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) hopefuls were cut from 42 (second acceptors) to just 24 vying for a spot in the capacity 14-starter, 4-emergency final field.

Red hot favourite in the Cox Plate odds at the Aussie bookies is 2YO Triple Crown champ Pierro who will look to extend his undefeated career record to nine from nine when they race in this Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Pierro is one of Waterhouse’s four-strong Cox Plate contingent for 2012 the next best fancied of which is More Joyous.

While Waterhouse opted to finally give up the charade of a Melbourne Cup campaign for More Joyous, the eight-time Group 1 winner not among the Melbourne Cup 2012 First Acceptances today, she will press on to a scintillating showdown with stablemate Pierro in the Cox Plate.

More Joyous also races in a Group 1 at Caulfield this Saturday with the Toorak Handicap firmly in her sights.

Waterhouse’s other hopefuls are Caulfield – Melbourne Cups fancy Glencadam Gold who won The Metropolitan in brilliant style last Saturday, and Proisir who was the beaten favourite in the Spring Champion Stakes on Epsom Day.

Meanwhile Gary Hennessy’s Underwood Stakes winner Ocean Park is second favourite in the Cox Plate betting markets behind Pierro, the Thorn Park four-year-old from New Zealand nominated for this Saturday’s Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Other notable hopefuls in the Cox Plate odds that are still in the mix following third declarations include:

  • Manighar (Peter Moody) – Flop in the Underwood when sixth but third up over more distance in Saturday’s Caulfield Stakes has the chance to atone and cement their spot in the Cox Plate
  • Green Moon (Robert Hickmott) – Was until today also still in Caulfield Cup contention but has had the Cox Plate (and Melbourne Cup) confirmed for them after a slashing Turnbull Stakes victory on the weekend
  • Rekindled Interest (Jim Conlan) – Ran a good third in the Cox Plate last spring before their third in the Mackinnon too, has to improve on a Turnbull Stakes 10th but Conlan is pressing on
  • Sincero (Stephen Farley) – Won the Memsie first-up last month but then finished fifth in the Underwood, goes to the Caulfield Stakes along with many of these Cox Plate fancies this weekend

Some of the more notable Cox Plate 2012 defectors at third acceptance stage are then:

  • Commanding Jewel (Leon Corstens) – Not quite of Cox Plate class just yet, Atlantic Jewel’s three-quarter sister will instead go for the Thousand Guineas against her own kind
  • December Draw (Mark Kavanagh) – Comeback galloper in flying form with a third in both the Underwood and Turnbull, goes to the Caulfield Cup and not the Cox Plate
  • It’s A Dundeel (Murray Baker) – Scored an upset win over the previously undefeated Proisir in the Spring Champion Stakes last weekend and is now 2012 Victoria Derby favourite
  • Secret Admirer (Grahame Begg) – Last year’s Epsom winner ran fifth when defending her title on the weekend and will press onto the Caulfield Cup over the mile and a half

2012 Cox Plate final acceptors revealing the official Cox Plate field will be released on October 24.
