Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Not that barriers will matter much in an eight-horse field over the mile but odds-on favourite for Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas 2012 Pierro has drawn gate seven as they look to secure their ninth consecutive victory.
Gai Waterhouse’s three times millionaire is undefeated to date and the son of Lonhro looks set to remain that way come Saturday afternoon when they face just seven rivals in the $1 million Group 1 BECKS Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
While the only chink in their otherwise flawless armour is the fact they won’t have seen Caulfield Racecourse before the big race, Waterhouse is ecstatic with their lead-up work at Flemington this work.
Pierro flew home in his final hit-out ahead of the weekend, when he will be out to add a fourth Group 1 title to his record, running his final 600m of a 1200m gallop in 33.88 seconds and the final 400m on the course proper in a sharp 21.35s.
“That’s him, he’s a super horse,” Waterhouse said.
“He’ll show you how good he is again on Saturday.”
The only other horse at single-figures in the Caulfield Guineas odds is Peter Snowden’s Golden Rose winner Epaulette, coming off a victory in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), who has drawn one inside the favourite in barrier six.
The next best fancied of the Caulfield Guineas hopefuls are then the Hawkes-trained All Too Hard and Leon Corstens’ Caulfield Guineas Prelude third placed Awesome Bro who have drawn gates three and two respectively.
Rounding out the rest of the Caulfield Guineas 2012 field, barriers and markets are then the Mick Price-trained Let Go Lenni on the rails who ran second to Epaulette in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, John O’Shea’s More Than Ready colt Ashokan (barrier eight), Bill Stutt Stakes runner-up behind Pierro last time out Carringbush Jack (barrier four) and roughie of the lot Road Trippin (barrier five).
