More Joyous to Carry 60kg – 2012 Toorak Handicap Weights

Star mare More Joyous has been allocated topweight of 60kg for the Group 1 2012 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

More Joyous will carry topweight of 60g in the Toorak Handicap

No horse has carried such a large impost to victory in the last 30 years, meaning it will be an incredible feat if the Gai Waterhouse-trained mare can do so and record a seventh straight victory.

The eight-time Group 1 winner heads into her biggest challenge of the spring so far in sensational form after cruising to comfortable victories in both the Listed Sheraco Stakes and the Group 3 Golden Pendant.

It is More Joyous’ second attempt at the Toorak Handicap, having won the $400,000 event in 2010.

2011 winner King Mufhasa is the second highest weighted entrant and is set to carry 59.5kg for his back-to-back attempt and his first Australian start of the spring.

The New Zealand veteran boasts an outstanding career record of 19 wins and 11 placings from 52 starts including 10 victories at Group 1 level.

Two of those Group 1 wins have come in Australia with the Stephen McKee-trained gelding having also won the Futurity Stakes in the autumn.

Despite being eight years old, the son of Pentire has shown he can still match it at the top level with a first-up fourth in the Group 1 Makfi Challenge Stakes followed by a win in the Group 1 Windsor Plate.

Of the 16 Toorak Hanidcap entries, only three other horses received more than the minimum weight allocation of 52kg with Mackinnon Stakes winner Glass Harmonium getting 56.5kg, German import Mawingo 54.5kg and multiple Group 1 winner Yosei 52.5kg.

Other horses entered for the Toorak Handicap include Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes third placegetter Solzhenitsyn, Bill Ritchie Handicap winner Steps In Time and the Anthony Cummings-trained Strike The Stars.

Toorak Handicap betting will open later this week and will have excellent value odds.
