Tanby has proven too good for the rest of the Listed 2012 The Bart Cummings field at Flemington Racecourse today.
The six-year-old demonstrated his natural talent as he sped away to win the race by a length.
Maluckyday showed fantastic his turn of foot to finish an eye catching second in the 2012 The Bart Cummings, while Dame Claire finished off the race in third.
Tanby was the favourite to win the 2012 The Bart Cummings at bookmaker.com.au and was paying odds of $3.60.
Co-owner Nick Williams, who shares ownership of the horse with his parents, was over the moon with Tanby’s latest race win.
“We’ve always had a big opinion of this horse,” Williams said.
“I think it was a pretty soft win in the end.”
Tanby has not yet won a race in any of his four starts this spring, with his most recent result being a fourth placing in the Listed JRA Stakes at Moonee Valley Racecourse on September 15.
“We knew he wasn’t ready at Moonee Valley,” admitted Williams.
The Galileo gelding is nominated for both the 2012 Caulfield Cup and 2012 Melbourne Cup this spring.
Williams is unsure whether we will see Tanby next in the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup, or whether they would opt for the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup over a similar distance the weekend after.
“It’s either the Caulfield Cup or the Moonee Valley Cup, we’ll just have to see how he pulls up,” he said.
While Tanby is currently on track for a run in the $6 million Melbourne Cup, Williams understands that preparing him for the race will not be without its risks.
“Here we are on the fourth of October and the Melbourne cup’s on the sixth of October,” Williams said.
“It’s so easy for something to go wrong.”
Tanby was ridden by jockey Damien Oliver in the 2012 The Bart Cummings.
“It’s nice to get on one from Lloyd William’s team,” Oliver said.
“He got there and he still doesn’t know how to put the race away.”
Oliver thinks Tanby will be at his best for the 2012 Melbourne Cup next month, rather than the 2012 Caulfield Cup on October 20.
“Probably the Melbourne Cup’s more suitable for him,” he said.
