Jolie Bay Scores Upset Roman Consul Stakes 2012 Result

It was a filly with a future that won the first Group race on the Epsom Handicap Day program at Royal Randwick today but not the odds-on favourite as the lightly-raced Jolie Bay scored an upset in the 2012 Roman Consul Stakes.

Jolie Bay scored an upset win in the 2012 Roman Consul Stakes

Betting markets for the $175,000 Group 2 Vili’s Pies Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) had been dominated by classy young filly Ichihara who jumped at $1.80 in the markets however it was a $9.50 shot in the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Jolie Bay who got the job done.

Having just her third career start today the nicely-bred daughter of Fastnet Rock from Snippets mare Legally Bay earned her shot in a Group 2 having won a Class 1 at Hawkesbury first-up on September 13.

And she rose to the occasion beautifully.

The favourite Ichihara led in the early stages but was quickly put under pressure on the straight.

While she did her best to fight back the drizzly conditions didn’t suit and she dropped right out with the rain taking the brilliance out of her run.

With 200-metres to go Golden Rose eighth placed Your Song hit the front and looked like they would run off with the win.

However the challengers came with Jolie Bay winding up down the centre and Knight Exemplar also coming on quickly.

In a great ride by Jay Ford it was Jolie Bay ($9.50) who just got there on the line in a photo finish to defeat the John O’Shea-trained Knight Exemplar ($14) by a short head while Your Song ($3.70) held on to finish third a further one and a quarter lengths back.

Lightly raced and going places were the post-race comments on the Roman Consul Stakes winner and while there wasn’t much in it her connections couldn’t be happier heading towards bigger and better things both this season and in the autumn.

“Today going from a class 1 at Hawkesbury to a Group 2 at Randwick… it doesn’t get much better,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

“She’s a real performer and she tires her heart out.

“It was much the same as the run at Hawkesbury once she got balanced up.”

Jay Ford agreed that Jolie Bay had a big future having also partnered with her for her Hawkesbury win as well as the Group 2 today.

“She’s a serious filly and I know she only won a Class 1 the other day at Hawkesbury but she gave me a really good feel…the way she won the other day she deserved a shot at this today,” he said.

“She’s come out and performed fantastic.

“She’s gutsy, she’s determined and she’s classy so she go there in the end.”
