Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Earlier today the Races.com.au crew made our late-mail 2012 Epsom Handicap Day Tips public knowledge with our insider predictions for all nine events on the Royal Randwick race card, but to help you win even more today below we’ve expanded on a few of our picks in our best bets of the day – where your money should be and when you should flee.
Lay of the Day – Race 4 #2 Mourayan
There has been steady money for Mourayan in the $125,000 Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) with the Robert Hickmott-trained seven-year-old paying around $2.90 to improve on their close second in the Hill Stakes and take this out, but form mine it is the longer priced Western Symbol ($6.50) that is itching to improve on their disappointing Cameron Handicap effort. Mourayan will win a big one, just not yet.
Better Than Bank Interest – Race 5 #1 Proisir
They are $1.40 and firming in the 2012 Spring Champion Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au but really we can’t see Proisir getting beaten here. It is a short price but 40% of every dollar back isn’t something to turn your nose up at considering this Choisir colt has won all three of their starts in emphatic style including the Group 3 Spring Stakes over the mile at Newcastle by a blistering six lengths.
Best Roughie of the Day – Race 7 #14 Lightinthenite
We aren’t tipping them to win the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) today, they aren’t quite up to that task yet, but the John O’Shea-trained Lightinthenite represents great value in the bookmaker.com.au markets to run a Place. They have been a surprise market mover in from $21 to $14 but the evidence is there for them in barrier one with Jim Cassidy aboard considering their good first-up second in the Cameron Handicap and their impressive Win (45.45%) and Place (81.82%) percentages – the second best of field behind favourite Fat Al ($4.40).
In A Tight Market – Race 6 #1 Dear Demi
There are three horses fighting out for top spot in the 2012 Flight Stakes odds today with Dear Demi ($3.70), Norzita ($3.80) and Urban Groove ($3.80) seemingly impossible to split. But there will be only one winner and we believe that will be Clarry Conners’ Furious Stakes winner Dear Demi. She has the experience, also Group 1 placed when second to Pierro in the Champagne Stakes during the autumn, lost to like. Urban Groove is classy but not ready while Norzita will come close.
In The Big One Race 7 #Rangirangdoo
Gai Waterhouse’s untapped four-year-old Fat Al is the favourite here but it is Chris Waller’s always honest veteran Rangirangdoo at $8.50 through bookmaker.com.au that we are tipping for an upset. Rangi is wide (barrier 14) and easing in the markets but this eight-year-old never gives up as shown when they put in the performance of the day in the George Main Stakes last start to finish a close second to stablemate and fellow Epsom hope Shoot Out ($5.50). Their record at the track and distance is a cracker with two wins and two seconds from five starts over the Randwick mile, expect them to add to that here.
