2012 Premiere Stakes Results – Red Tracer Wins the Last

It may have been a long day at the office for Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller who missed out on all the Group 1’s at Randwick’s Epsom Handicap Day but he finished the day on a high with his Myer Classic-bound mare Red Tracer adding another Group 2 title to her record in the Premiere Stakes 2012.

Premiere Stakes winner Red Tracer is 2012 Myer Classic bound

Originally scheduled to resume racing last weekend, the Dane Shadow mare last seen running a brave fourth beaten under half a length in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 23, Waller made the decision to bypass an encounter with More Joyous and instead saved Red Tracer’s first-up run for Epsom Day.

“She’s great fresh and she was ready to go last week and we just side tracked More Joyous and fortunately it’s paid off today,” Wall said.

It proved the right move with the five-year-old scoring a nice win over the boys in the $200,000 Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m), her third Group race victory.

Favourite in the Premiere Stakes today was outstanding sprinter Rain Affair however Joe Pride’s classy son of Commands failed to show up today and after leading throughout the early stages faded on the straight when challenged and will be sent out to the paddock now.

After mustering speed on the inside early to take the lead Rain Affair had them well strung out coming for home but with 300m left to travel the challengers came including the eventual winner Red Tracer.

Jockey Nash Rawiller, who missed the Group 1 winning rides on Gai Waterhouse’s runners Fat Al and Glencadam Gold in the Epsom and The Metropolitan respectively with Tommy Berry doing the riding for Tulloch Lodge today, got Red Tracer to bolt away and hit the lead with 100m to go.

After she tagged the speed in fourth spot earlier she was now ready to pounce.

Red Tracer ($6.50) continued to draw away from the pack in an impressive effort to defeat the Clarry Conners-trained Satin Shoes ($10).

Emotional Circus ($21) then ran on really nice form the back of the field to charge home right out wide and run third.

“She’s always had a tremendous turn of foot she travelled like the winner the whole race,” Rawiller said of Red Tracer in the Premiere Stakes.

“Very deserving of this win she’s a great mare.”

While admitting Red Tracer hadn’t been his focus for the day, Waller was still thrilled with the win and said it was full steam ahead for her into the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday November 3.

“She was the last thing on my mind today we had a few runners in the Group 1 races so it’s been a long day at the office but that’s what racing is all about,” Waller said.

“It’s been a very long day for us but we’re very appreciative to get this win in the last.

“She’s on her way to the Myer third-up so I’d say the next race for her will probably be at Caulfield in two weeks’ time.”
