The Metropolitan 2012 – Preview and Tips

The 2012 Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday stands as one of four Group 1 races on the bumper nine-race card.

At first glance it would appear the imports have an advantage, with seven of the 12 runners having been bred overseas. And this doesn’t include the two New Zealand-bred contenders.

But there are also some strong local hopes and one of those is Lamasery, who at $4.00 is second in the betting market behind Gai Waterhouse-trained import Glencadam Gold ($3.80).

As always in the big Sydney races Chris Waller has a strong hand and three of his charges occupy the next three betting spots with Kelinni ($7.50), Stout Hearted ($8.00) and Permit ($8.00).

Other horses in the Metropolitan include 2011 winner The Verminator ($21.00) and Australian Derby runner-up Polish Knight ($26.00).

Not sure who to back in this staying test? Keep reading as the hard work has been done for you by the team who bring to your our very best 2012 Metropolitan tips.

The Winner

#8 Permit $8.00

Sure, he’s placed once from three starts this campaign but the stats show he hasn’t won under 2200m and so far his longest trip of the spring has been 2000m.

He’s a completely different proposition as he gets up in distance and the 2400m suits him down to the ground. In fact, two of his four career victories have come at the distance.

Fit and ready to fire with three runs under the belt this British import is all stayer and is good enough to grind them out here.

The Placings

#3 Lamasery $4.00 and #12 Buxted $26.00

Lamasery has been tracking nicely towards this and looks an improved horse from the one that finished third here last year.

Has improved every run to date, was hitting the line well when winning the Hill Stakes in a run that suggested he will only get better with the extra distance.

Buxted comes up from Victoria and it’s fair to say he isn’t the most talented horse. But he is a fit horse who will run the trip with ease and what he lacks in ability he makes up for with stamina and toughness.
