The Bart Cummings 2012 Betting Tips

One of the key support races on the Turnbull Stakes Day program at Flemington on Saturday will be the 2012 The Bart Cummings, the team’s tips for the Melbourne Cup prep race detailed below.

Tanby is a great place bet for The Bart Cummings 2012 this weekend

Set to jump at 2:20pm as Flemington Race 4, the $120,000 Listed The Bart Cummings (2520m) field is down to 13 stayers following the early scratchings of #1 Efficient who has been retired due to injury, and their former stablemate #3 Seville who will start in the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at the meeting instead.

Market mover and persistent favourite in The Bart Cummings odds at is Exceptionally ($2.80) who was last seen running a slashing third to Folding Gear in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.

A genuine stayer that has winning form up to 2600m and that can also handle a wet track (rain predicted for Melbourne this weekend) it is easy to see why the punters are coming for Exceptionally.

But is this Stawell-based mare also the tip to win?

2012 The Bart Cummings Trifecta Tip

#8 Exceptionally ($2.80) from #2 Maluckyday ($7) and #6Tanby ($3.50)

  • Exceptionally is the deserved favourite and their consistent recent record over 2000m and over looks ideal heading into this spring cups lead-up. They have a decent record at Flemington (9-2-2-0), their last start third in the Naturalism was good and they won over 2600m here in July by three and a half on a slow track, so if the rain comes expect them to firm further.
  • Maluckyday, runner-up in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, bummed out in the Underwood last start but is tipped for improvement getting up in distance here, winner of the track and distance and consistent Win & Place rate (60%), comeback galloper ready to do just that.
  • Tanby from the Lloyd WilliamsRobert Hickmott contingent hasn’t won at Flemington before but this is their pet distance as they have won two from three over the 2500m and they also looked good running fourth over this distance with 58.5kg (they drop to 55.5kg on Saturday) last time out in the JRA Trophy when beaten just over a length. Second to subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Duanden in the Geelong Cup last spring before their Bendigo Cup win, looking to be getting back around that form now.

Roughie We Like

  • #10 Dame Claire ($18) – Pat Carey’s smart Danehill Dancer mare caught the eye at Mornington last Saturday to win the Listed RM Ansett Classic (2413m) and she is again in line for a big run here dropping back from 58kg to just 54kg. Is a dual winner at Flemington, including the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes over the two miles back in May
