A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
On Saturday Clarry Conners’ well-tried filly Dear Demi will step up to Group 1 company again for the 2012 Flight Stakes at Royal Randwick, and the only instruction her trainer will give jockey James McDonald will be to win.
Dehere three-year-old Dear Demi has raced 11 times to date for a trio of wins and four minor placings including her second behind boom colt Pierro in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the Randwick mile on Sydney Cup Day.
This time in she has run in the three traditional lead-ups to the $400,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) finishing third in the Silver Shadow Stakes, winning the Group 2 Furious Stakes and then finishing a disappointing fourth having been held up in the Tea Rose Stakes last time out on September 22.
“They went too slow for her in the Tea Rose,” Conners said of her most recent run.
“And she got galloped on a little bit as well but she’s come through all that now and looks a million dollars.”
For her six most recent runs ace Kiwi jockey McDonald has been in the saddle and he will ride the John Singleton-owned Dear Demi again when she returns to the 1600m at Randwick for the Flight Stakes 2012.
“Win. That’s the only thing I’m going to tell him (McDonald),” Conners said.
The Epsom Handicap Day feature has this year drawn just nine three-year-old fillies and Dear Demi, in barrier five, is the current $3.70 second favourite to win through bookmaker.com.au in markets led by the Bart Cummings-trained Norzita ($3.50).
