Colin Little’s Tattersall’s Tiara failure Soft Sand has opened favourite to defeat all of her rivals in a capacity 2012 Blazer Stakes field at Flemington’s Turnbull Stakes Day this Saturday.
The four-year-old Dansili mare jumped one of the top fancies in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in Brisbane back in June but ran a below par 15th to Pear Tart.
She resumed at Caulfield two weeks ago running a credible fourth to Detours in the Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint Heat (1200m) and on Saturday will face a similar class field for the $220,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m).
A big 16-starter, 3-emergency field was accepted for the Blazer Stakes 2012, Soft Sand topping the bookmaker.com.au markets at a quote of $3.50 after drawing on the rails in barrier one.
Little is confident that if she doesn’t encounter interference from the inside alley, as she has in her two unlucky first-up runs, Soft Sand will be the one to beat.
“The good thing is that she came away from her last run without injury because she was really knocked around,” he said.
“I always thought barrier one was the best barrier to have. But with her I just hope we get a clear and uninterrupted run to finish off.”
There are just two other mares in at single figures in the Blazer Stakes odds with four-time Group 1 champion Mosheen ($5) and Hi Belle ($8.50).
Robert Smerdon’s star Fastnet Rock mare Mosheen hasn’t won a race since the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill back in early April, her first two runs this time in leaving a lot to be desired.
Mosheen however underwent minor throat surgery which put her spring preparations behind and Smerdon is confident she will be nearing her best on Saturday as she gets ready for a shot at the 2012 Myer Classic this Victoria Derby Day.
“She has progressed now and I’d expect her to be really competitive in the Blazer,” Smerdon said.
“This (distance) should suit her even more and she is fit and well, fully recovered from the throat operation and working nicely.”
The John Gunning-trained Hi Belle meanwhile has had just the one run this season when coming within a length of Zurella to run second in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at the track on September 8, Craig Williams replaced by Vlad Duric for Saturday where Hi Belle has an awkward barrier 17 draw to overcome.
The rest of the field is relatively open and there could be nice value in some of the double figure chances including Tattersall’s Tiara third placegetter Gai’s Choice ($11) drawn nicely in gate four, the Danny O’Brien-trained Shopaholic ($12) to be ridden by Glen Boss and the Peter Snowden-trained Raspberries ($13) who resumes racing after winning the Scone Cup back in May.
