Exceptionally Tops 2012 The Bart Cummings Odds

Progressive staying mare Exceptionally has opened the clear favourite to win the latest spring cups lead-up and beat home a big field in The Bart Cummings 2012 at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday.

Bendigo Cup winner Tanby is the second favourite for the 2012 The Bart Cummings on Saturday

The Terry & Karina O’Sullivan-trained Ekraar six-year-old will be racing in the $120,000 Listed The Bart Cummings (2520m) for the third year on the trot having run second to Harris Tweed in 2010 and ninth in the wet to Mourayan last spring.

This year their form looks a lot more promising, Exceptionally coming off a close third to Folding Gear in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

For that run they jumped from barrier 16 of 16 and carried 54kg while on Saturday they will have gate four with the same weight paying $3.10 in the latest The Bart Cummings odds at bookmaker.com.au.

The 2012 The Bart Cummings field is down to 14 hopefuls following the early scratching of #1 Efficient, the 2007 Melbourne Cup winner having been retired due to the re-occurrence of an old leg injury.

Following Exceptionally then in the updated The Bart Cummings betting markets are then:

  • #6 Tanby ($4) – Lloyd Williams-owned import was second in the Geelong Cup behind subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden last spring, looking in good form having run a close fourth in the JRA Stakes over this distance at Moonee Valley last start
  • #5 Shenzhou Steeds ($5.50) – Michael Moroney’s Ipswich – Caloundra Cups winner will be third-up for the season, last seen running a brave fourth in the Naturalism Stakes
  • #2 Maluckyday ($7) – Runner-up in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, had issues with soundness over the past year but is tipped to improve getting up in distance after their 11th in the Underwood Stakes last time out

Also in with a genuine chance at juicer prices are the likes of Naturalism Stakes fifth placed Seville ($15) and last Saturday’s Listed Ansett Classic winner at Mornington Dame Claire ($18) who won the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes over the two miles at Flemington back in May.
