Commanding Jewel is 2012 Edward Manifold Stakes Betting Favourite

Commanding Jewel is the favourite for the Group 2 2012 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) at Flemington on Saturday which will see a full field of three-year-old fillies press their claims for a spot in the 2012 Thousand Guineas.

Commanding Jewel is almost a certainty to head towards the Thousand Guineas provided she gets through Saturday unscathed and is currently the bookmaker.com.au $3.50 top elect.

Perhaps unfairly hyped up due to her close relation to the unbeaten Atlantic Jewel, Commanding Jewel won the first two starts of her career before being narrowly beaten by Lady Of Harrods in the Thousand Guineas Prelude last month.

But it will be no easy task for her to return to the winners’ circle this weekend with a number of quality competitors including:

  • Maybe Discreet ($6.00): Adelaide filly who will be looking to join fellow South Australian and Thousand Guineas favourite Molto Bene in the Group 1 event on October 17. A winner of two of five starts she was mighty impressive when winning the Listed Morphetville Guineas by three lengths last month.
  • Kate ($8.00): Promising New Zealand filly who will be having her first start on Australian soil. Has won two of six starts and is being aimed at the Oaks.
  • Members Joy ($8.50): Question mark as to how she will handle the 1600m but the Robert Smerdon-trained youngster is a talented individual. Won the Listed cap D’Antibes Stakes last month before getting caught wide when fifth in the Thousand Guineas Prelude.
  • Proper Madam ($11.00): Has showed potential in the early stages of her career but will have to bounce back from a last-start 10th in the Thousand Guineas Prelude.

Also in the 16-horse field for the three-year-old fillies’ feature are Showya Miss ($10.00), Spitfire Lady ($15.00), Cameo ($19.00), Walk With Attitude ($19.00) and Affable ($26.00).
