Spring Champion Stakes 2012 Field – Proisir V It’s A Dundeel

A small seven-horse field has been announced to contest the Group 1 2012 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on Saturday and at first glance it appears to be a two-horse race.

It's A Dundeel

It's a Dundeel is the most likely challenger to Proisir in the Spring Champion Stakes

It is set to be a battle between colts Proisir and It’s A Dundeel, both who remain unbeaten in their short careers so far.

Proisir will start as favourite after a six-length win in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle last month but It’s A Dundeel is a worthy challenger.

The Murray Baker-trained colt is being aimed at the Victoria Derby and has so far been impressive in three Australian starts.

After winning twice in midweek events at Wyong and Canterbury, the son of High Chaparral scored a 1-1/2 length win in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Randwick.

Baker was pleased with the Gloaming Stakes performance and is expecting the horse to continue to improve throughout the spring.

“It’s a sign of a good horse when they keep stepping up, he was up in grade today.” Baker said after the Gloaming Stakes.

“Hopefully we can get him down to Melbourne and he can run good (sic) in the Spring Champion.”

Gai Waterhouse has the favourite with Proisir but has also accepted with King Of Olympia who finished fourth in the Gloaming Stakes.

Gloaming Stakes runner-up Honorius will have a second crack at It’s A Dundeel after being run down by the Kiwi at Randwick on September 22.

Other Spring Champion Stakes runners include Bart Cummings’ Lunar Rise and the David Hayes-trained Bradman.
