Metropolitan 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A strong field of 14 runners has been named to contest the Group 1 2012 Metropolitan (2400m) which takes place as part of “Super Saturday” at Randwick this weekend.

Heading the field is Gai Waterhouse-trained import Glencadam Gold who has won all three starts since arriving on Australian soil with the most impressive being a dominant start-to-finish display in the Newcastle Cup.

Waterhouse bought the import with the goal of chasing glory in the spring’s biggest staying races and he was given a glowing endorsement from jockey Nash Rawiller following the Newcastle Cup win.

“I ran him along at a genuine clip the whole way and let this horse get into his own rhythm…this bloke’s all class isn’t he,” Rawiller said.

“He’s been well performed over in England and Gai’s put the final touches on him over here and done a terrific job with him.”

But Rawiller will not be riding Glencadam Gold on Saturday, with Tommy Berry booked for the ride.

Also heading into the race in terrific form is David Vandyke-trained gelding Lamasery who is fresh off a win in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on September 22.

The six-year-old finished third in the Metropolitan last year and is still chasing an elusive Group 1 win.

Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller, who won the event last year with The Verminator, has a strong presence with The Verminator joined by Permit, Stout Hearted and Kelinni this year.

While Sydney horses dominate much of the field, there are some travelling contenders including recent JRA Stakes winner Buxted and former Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

Fruehling won at Mornington first-up and has since run a promising fourth in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Other Metropolitan contenders include Australian Derby runner-up Polish Knight and Ron Quinton-trained mare Crafty Irna.
