Hurtle Myrtle Missing From 2012 Blazer Stakes Field

Robert Smerdon’s stable star Mosheen is the only Group 1 winner in the mix for the Blazer Stakes 2012 at Flemington this Saturday after the non-acceptance of Hurtle Myrtle in the mares-only showdown.

Mosheen is the only Group 1 winner in the 2012 Blazer Stakes field for Saturday

Reigning Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle was not among the capacity field of 16 starters plus three emergencies announced today for the $220,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m), her trainer Matthew Smith opting to bypass the southern clash in favour of staying in Sydney for the $200,000 Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

Without Hurtle Myrtle the only former elite level champ in the Blazer Stakes field for 2012 is then Mosheen, the four time Group 1 winner drawn in barrier six with Nicholas Hall to ride.

Last seen running a below par fifth in the Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint Series Heat (1200m) at Caulfield on September 22, Mosheen was originally Cox Plate bound but a campaign put back by a minor throat operation will instead see her bypass the weight-for-age feature and head towards this year’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Victoria Derby Day.

A number of Mohseen’s major rivals in the Blazer Stakes on Saturday have suffered an early blow with wide barrier draws including the Peter Snowden-trained Scone Cup winner Raspberries (12), resuming Schweppes Oaks champ Invest (15), Hi Belle (17) coming off a first-up second in the Let’s Elope Stakes, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Miss Stellabelle (16 and Roger James’ last-start winning Kiwi raider Full Of Spirit who has the extreme outside barrier (19) to overcome.

Horses that have fared better in the Blazer Stakes barrier draw and that are a genuine chance then include the Danny O’Brien-trained Shopaholic (barrier two) and Colin Little’s Dansili mare Soft Sand (barrier one) coming off a fourth in the Sportingbet Sprint.

The official field, barriers, jockeys and weights for the 2012 Blazer Stakes – due to run as Flemington Race 5 at 3:00pm on Saturday – are detailed below.
