Craven Plate 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A bumper nine-race card will take place for “super saturday” at Randwick this weekend and one of the key support races to the main events is the Group 3 2012 Craven Plate (2000m).

Eleven horses have accepted for the $125,000 race but one of the most high profile runners may not line up with Rangirangdoo dual accepting for the Epsom Handicap.

If the veteran Group 1 winner heads towards the Epsom it will create a far more open Craven Plate field.

Gai Waterhouse has two runners, with Herculian Prince set to come from barrier six and Western Symbol barrier eight.

But both will have to bounce back from horror first-up runs where they finished last in their respective assignments.

Even if Rangirangdoo doesn’t line up in the Craven Plate, the Waller-Waterhouse rivalry will be well and truly alive with Waller’s import Class Is Class to have his third run on Australian soil.

The six-year-old showed plenty of improvement in his second-up run when fifth in the Hill Stakes and is likely to show improvement again this weekend.

There are not any last-start winners in the field but one who went close was the Lloyd Williams-owned Mourayan who was a narrow second to Lamasery in the Hill Stakes.

Nominated for both the Cox Plate and the cups, the seven-year-old is a talented stayer but will have to overcome an outside barrier draw on Saturday.

Mourayan is one of a number of imports in the field as is David Vandyke-trained four-year-old Less Is More who will be having his second start in Australia after finishing third at Randwick on September 22.

Other Craven Plate runners are Wyong veteran Gazza Guru, German import Seville and the Bart Cummings-trained Dare To Dream.
