Voila Ici Set for Turnbull Stakes 2012

Peter Moody’s exciting import Voila Ici will look to continue their nice spring form when they have just their third start on Aussie turf in the 2012 Turnbull Stakes at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse this Saturday.

Voila Ici (grey) will have their final Caulfield Cup 2012 lead-up in the Turnbull Stakes this Saturday

Set to feature a field full of Caulfield Cup fancies, the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) drew 19 nominations including Daylami seven-year-old Voila Ici.

The international Group 1 winner joined Moody’s Caulfield stables earlier this year flying over from England on the same flight returning superstar Black Caviar was on after her Diamond Jubilee success.

Their debut down under was only fair when they finished five and a half lengths away sixth to Sincero in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 1.

They showed great improvement and caught the eye second-up however when crossing only half a length away second to smart Kiwi youngster Ocean Park in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

They will face a similar class field but go up in distance this Saturday in the Turnbull Stakes 2012 facing off against fellow Underwood Stakes runners December Draw (3rd) who won the Turnbull 12 months ago, and reigning Caulfield Cup champ Southern Speed (4th).

The Turnbull will be a fine tune-up for Voila Ici as they head towards the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20, and also possibly the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 6.

“He’s gone along nicely ever since he got here and Saturday should have him just about right,” Moody said.

“He’ll go straight to the Caulfield Cup (after the Turnbull).”

Voila Ici is currently a $17 chance in the Caulfield Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au which are led by last year’s injured favourite December Draw ($9), who finished dead last after breaking down in the Cup on the back of a Turnbull Stakes win, and the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained Southern Speed ($12).

For the 2012 Melbourne Cup they are at $26, prices that are sure to firm if they get the better of their Turnbull rivals this weekend.

The 2012 Turnbull Stakes final field and barrier draw are due for release tomorrow and will be published right here at Races.com.au.
