Strong 2012 Craven Plate Nominations Announced

It may only be a support race on the Randwick card this weekend but the Group 3 2012 Craven Plate (2000m) features plenty of quality.

Linton

Linton is one of the top Craven Plate nominations

Nineteen horses have been entered for the $125,000 event including the John Sadler-trained Linton.

The six-year-old, who has been nominated for the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup, is a multiple Group 1 placegetter and was solid first-up when fourth to Happy Trails in the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

Chris Waller pair Shoot Out and Rangirangdoo have both been entered but are almost certain non-starters with the leading Sydney trainer likely to opt for the Group 1 Epsom with both instead.

Prolific owner Lloyd Williams is set to have a strong presence with three horses nomination including seven-year-old Mourayan who has come close to Group 1 honours on a number of occasions.

The cups-bound entire finished second in the 2010 Metropolitan as well as the 2011 BMW and Mackinnon Stakes.

He began his spring campaign in promising style when backing up a fourth in the Makybe Diva Stakes with a close runner-up in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m).

The other Williams-owned entrants are fellow imports Midas Touch and Seville.

As always at this time of year Gai Waterhouse has a strong presence across the card including the Craven Plate where she has nominated both Western Symbol and Herculian Prince.

But both will have to bounce back from poor spring starts if they are to be any chance of winning this weekend with both coming off first-up last-place finishes.

Other Craven Plate nominations include John Sadler’s American import Winchester, Newcastle Cup runner-up Gazza Guru and Queensland gelding Rothera.
