Rain Affair Heads 2012 Premiere Stakes Nominations

Joe Pride-trained sprinter Rain Affair heads a 14-horse list of nominations for the Group 2 2012 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick this weekend.

The five-year-old front-runner will be out to get his spring back on track after failing to show his usual fire in the Concorde Stakes first-up.

Pride has been forced to reassess the son of Commands’ spring program after he finished fourth and nearly five lengths behind stablemate Tiger Tees in first-up hitout.

The winner of 11 of 16 starts is being aimed at the Group 1 Manikato Stakes but another failure this weekend would all but rule him out of contention.

Apart from Rain Affair, there is a strong female presence amongst the other quality nominations including Pear Tart, Red Tracer, Streama and Hurtle Myrtle.

Multiple Group 1 winner Streama will be having the second start of her spring campaign after finishing third first-up in the Sheraco Stakes as will Hurtle Myrtle who struggled first-up when ninth in the Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint at Caulfield.

Both Pear Tart and Red Tracer will begin kick off their spring preparations this weekend after successful winter campaigns in Brisbane.

Red Tracer won the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes and finished fourth in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara while Pear Tart has won her last four starts including the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) and the Tattersall’s Tiara.

One nominated mare who is already well into her spring campaign is the Clarry Connors-trained Satin Shoes who finished third in the Concorde Stakes first-up and a narrow second in the Group 2 Shorts (1200m).

Other Premiere Stakes entrants include promising Jason Coyle-trained mare Emotional Circus and Lionel Cohen’s Aeronautical.
