Controversial Cox Plate defector Mosheen heads the list of early entries for the Blazer Stakes 2012 at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday, Robert Smerdon’s Myer Classic-bound champion racing third-up for the season.
The four-time Group 1 winning Fastnet Rock four-year-old had preparations her spring campaign interrupted when she had to undergo a minor throat operation, Mosheen’s opening two season starts disappointing.
She ran 13th to We’re Gonna Rock in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) and then fifth to Detours in the Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint (1200m).
When her name was not among the 80 second declarations for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), the October 27 feature having been spruiked as her target by Smerdon, retirement rumours spread like bush fire.
The fire was soon put out when Smerdon explained they had simply run out of time for a Cox Plate 2012 campaign with Mosheen who instead would progress towards the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, November 3, starting with the $220,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m) on Saturday.
“We lost a whole month because of the throat operation but after two races she is now fit enough to show her best,” Smerdon said after watching Mosheen work impressively on the course proper at Flemington on Tuesday morning.
Also known as the Rose Of Kingston Stakes, this year’s edition of the Blazer Stakes drew a massive 25 nominations with the other Group 1 winner in the mix being the Matthew Smith-trained Hurtle Myrtle who is the reigning Myer Classic champion.
The six-year-old Dane Shadow mare resumed to run ninth in the Sportingbet Sprint and will be out to improve getting up in distance this weekend.
Other noteworthy Blazer Stakes 2012 nominations include the Peter Snowden-trained Scone Cup winner Raspberries, Clarry Conners’ SA Schweppes Oaks champ Invest kicking off their spring carnival, four-year-old Pins mare Shopaholic, first-up runner-up to Zurella in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes at this track and distance last month Hi Belle, and Colin Little’s one-time Tattersall’s Tiara favourite Soft Sand.
Dansili mare Soft Sand failed in the Tattersall’s when running 15th to Pear Tart and resumed from a three month spell in the Sportingbet Sprint running a good fourth, Little hoping she will be even more competitive with a clear run in the Blazer.
“She hopefully will get a clear run this time and she then will go on to the Myer Classic,” Little said, Soft Sand having run over 1200m at Flemington on Tuesday morning with her final 600m run in a sharp 37 seconds.
