Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Chris Waller has made the decision to miss The Metropolitan in Sydney this Saturday with his Colin Stephen Handicap winner Kelinni who he wants to keep fresh for the 2012 Melbourne Cup in Victoria next month.
Consistent European import Kelinni won their third race from four starts over the weekend when narrowly hanging on to beat home the Gai Waterhouse-trained Julienas in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m).
Originally Waller was considering backing them up in the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick this Saturday, the Refuse To Bend four-year-old one of the top fancies for the handicap feature.
However it is now more likely that they will skip the Epsom Handicap Day feature and focus on getting into the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday November 6.
“He could run well in the Metropolitan but then be a spent force,” Waller said.
“I need to work out the race to target to get him into the Melbourne Cup.”
Kelinni was penalised one kilogram for their Colin Stephen win by Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Handicapper and is now weighted on 51kg for both the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20 and the Melbourne Cup 2012.
Up to 49th in the Caulfield Cup ballot after the penalty and 62nd in the Melbourne Cup order of entry Kelinni pays $81 and $101 respectively in the latest Caulfield and Melbourne Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au.
Waller hinted even more over the likely path Kelinni will tread towards the Melbourne Cup with the Caulfield Cup also an unlikely option.
“Maybe a race like the City Tattersall’s Cup in two weeks would suit,” he said.
The $100,000 Listed City Tatt’s Club Cup (2400m) runs at Royal Randwick on October 20, the same day the Caulfield Cup runs in Melbourne.
