Cup Hopes Head 2012 Turnbull Stakes Nominations

A contingent of the top Caulfield and Melbourne Cup chances will have their latest runs at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday when they take each other on in the Turnbull Stakes 2012.

December Draw

Caulfield Cup favourite December Draw vies for successive wins in the Turnbull Stakes 2012 on Saturday

A total of 19 stayers were nominated for the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) this year, the race offering a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption, including defending champion December Draw.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained import won the Turnbull on the back of a Naturalism Stakes win 12 months ago, continuing on to jump the favourite in the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m).

December Draw however broke down in the Caulfield Cup and failed to beat home any of their 17 rivals.

After a lengthy 11 month break the Medecis six-year-old resumed at Flemington on September 8 running eighth to Southern Speed in the Makybe Diva Stakes before improving to run a close third to Cox Plate hope Ocean Park in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield last start.

Also coming via the Underwood Stakes are the likes of Peter Moody’s progressive import Voila Ici (2nd), reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed (4th), SA Derby winner Zabeelionaire (7th), Bart Cummings’ imported Grade 1 Hollywood Turf Cup champ Sanagas (10th), the Hawkes-trained Maluckyday (11th) and their stablemate Niwot (13th).

December Draw is currently topping the futures odds for the 2012 Caulfield Cup on October 20 paying $9 to atone for their failure last year through bookmaker.com.au.

The next shortest-priced of the Turnbull Stakes nominees in the Caulfield Cup odds are then Southern Speed ($12) and Voila Ici ($17).

Other notable 2012 Turnbull Stakes entries include Pat Carey’s Australian Derby winner Ethiopia, last year’s Cox Plate third placegetter Rekindled Interest, recent Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes champ Happy Trails, Mourayan coming off a Hill Stakes second and the fellow Lloyd Williams-owned Green Moon a one-time Caulfield Cup betting favourite.
