Bel Sprinter Tops 2012 Gilgai Stakes Nominations

Racing returns to Flemington this weekend which means the straight for sprinters and there have been a quality group of 12 entered for the Group 2 2012 Gilgai Stakes (1200m).

Bel Sprinter

Bel Sprinter heads Gilgai Stakes nominations

One of the top nominations is Jason Warren-trained gelding Bel Sprinter who got his spring off to a flyer when winning the Group 3 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley last month.

The son of Bel Esprit has won six of 10 starts and is being aimed at the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

Tony Gollan won the Gilgai Stakes with Temple Of Boom last year and will attempt to go back-to-back this year with half-brother Spirit Of Boom.

The five-year-old was narrowly beaten first-up in the Bobbie Lewis at Flemington before making a Sydney detour where he produced a strong fourth in the Shorts from a wide barrier.

Fellow Queenslander Excellantes has been nominated from the Robert Heathcote stable after proving himself a stakes competitor during the Queensland winter.

The five-year-old won two of four starts including the Listed Chief De Beers Quality.

Having her first run of the spring is Peter Moody-trained mare Mid Summer Music who impressed in the winter when scoring an upset two-length win in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane.

The seven-year-old is no stranger to the Flemington straight, having finished third to Black Caviar in the Patinack Farm Classic there last year as well as second in the Let’s Elope Stakes.

Also entered is Atomic Force who has so far this spring been unable to recapture the form that has made him a dual Group 1 winner.

Other Gilgai Stakes nominations include Darley four-year-old Galah, multiple Group 1 placegetter King’s Rose and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Hallowell Belle.

For great odds on the Gilgai Stakes, head to later this week when markets open.

At, spring betting has never been better with their wide selection of options and a huge $400 bonus bet offer!
