2012 Flight Stakes Nominations Released

Punters will be treated to four Group 1 features at Royal Randwick for Epsom Handicap Day this Saturday, October 6, including the Flight Stakes 2012 for three-year-old fillies.

On Monday all the Randwick race nominations were released for this weekend’s Sydney Spring Racing Carnival meet including those for the $400,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) which drew just 10 nominees.

The best of the staying types of this age will be taking on the boys in the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at the same meet, leaving the Flight Stakes to be fought out between the milers.

Twelve months ago subsequent Australian Oaks winner Streama took out the Flight Stakes completing the Princess Series trifecta as she had earlier saluted in both the Group 2 Furious Stakes and Tea Rose Stakes.

This year a number of fillies come via the same traditional lead-ups with Clarry Conners’ Dehere filly Dear Demi, second to Pierro in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes during the autumn, having won the Furious Stakes.

Also backing up from the Furious Stakes at Warwick Farm on September 8 are the likes of the progressive Chris Waller-trained Jade Marauder (3rd) and distant fourth placegetter Flying Snitzel.

Tea Rose Stakes winner Longport from the Patinack Farm stables is also set to back up in the Flight Stakes, the Casino Prince filly having earlier been beaten over 26 lengths by Spring Champion Stakes fancy Proisir, as is Tea Rose runner-up Norzita who was defeated by just a short half-head.

Furious Stakes second placed Jade Marauder also finished third in the Tea Rose Stakes while Dear Demi failed to complete the double backing up from her Furious Win with a fourth in the Tea Rose as the beaten favourite.

Other notable Flight Stakes nominees then include the unbeaten Gai Waterhouse-trained Urban Groove who was last seen winning the Listed Reginald Allen Quality Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill last Saturday, and Bart Cummings’ last-start Kembla Grange winner Duet.

See below for the full 2012 Flight Stakes nominees and stay tuned for the final fields for all the Epsom Handicap Day features.
