Caulfield Guineas Prelude 2012 Results – Epaulette Wins

Epaulette stamped his claims as one of the main dangers to Pierro in the 2012 Caulfield Guineas after scoring a comfortable win in the Group 3 2012 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) today.

The Darley colt held a spot just off the pace from leaders Let Go Lenni and Ashokan before Kerrin McEvoy stoked his mount as they approached the turn.

Epaulette, who was fresh off a win in the Golden Rose, responded and raced to take the lead from Let Go Lenni before hanging on to win by a neck from both Let Go Lenni and the fast-finishing Awesome Bro.

Trainer Peter Snowden was pleased with the result but admitted the three-year-old will have to be at his absolute best when taking on Pierro in the main event in two weeks.

“He’s learning all the time. He’s still got that habit whenever there is something that whenever there is something in front of him he’ll chase ” Snowden said.

“He probably needs to be at his best the next time we’re here but he will be. I’m very happy with the way he’s going.”

McEvoy said Pierro is undoubtedly the benchmark for the Caulfield Guineas but still gives his mount every chance of chasing down the undefeated star.

“With a horse like him he can raise the bar and with a big bar in front of him like Pierro you never know what can happen,” he said.

It was a strong second-place effort from the lightly-raced Let Go Lenni and Awesome Bro showed potential with a storming finish to take third.
