Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
On Saturday punters will be treated to a double shot of Group 2 racing action at Rosehill Gardens one of those races being the 2012 Shannon Stakes, and to help you back the winner below are the exclusive Races.com.au team’s Shannon Stake betting tips.
Running as Rosehill Race 5 at 3:20pm the $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) features just eight hopefuls this year and looking at the current odds it seems the winner is easy to pick.
One of six favourites due to jump at the meeting for Gai Waterhouse, #1 Fat Al is at a nearly unbackable price to take out the Shannon Stakes paying $1.30 through bookmaker.com.au.
Drawn on the rails with Nash Rawiller riding the flying Al Maher four-year-old, a winner of five of their eight starts to date including two Group 3 Randwick features back in April, Fat Al was last seen running an excellent first-up second to Ambidexter in the Group 2 Theo Marks Sprint (1400m).
While they were beaten there the bookies are taking zero chances with the 2012 Epsom Handicap fancy with Fat Al, even with 58kg, tipped to win and win comfortably.
So does the Races.com.au’s expert team of tipsters have the same opinion? Or are we tipping an upset Shannon Stakes result on Saturday?
#1 Fat Al ($1.30)
Fat Al definitely won’t be the best value bet you place this weekend but they really look one of the safest and even at this price we think you’d be mad to bet against them.
They rise from 56kg to 58kg and need to handle that, but they won by five and a half at Canterbury over 1900 in November last year when last carrying 58kg (having had 53kg on their back the run before) so there’s no concerns there.
Has the form, distance looks ideal second-up and scream class having already won two Group 3 features with just eight starts to their name – the bargain $27,000 buy is going from strength to strength.
#2 Rolling Pin ($8.50)
Second most consistent horse in this race, Gwenda Markwell’s five-year-old Pins gelding has a 59.09% place rate that we expect them to add to here.
They haven’t won at the track from fie attempts but do boast two seconds and a third, while the distance also holds no fears (6-2-1-0).
Also come off a win over the 1500m in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle last week, and while they can be hit and miss there’s not much else aside the favourite in this race.
Roughie We Like
#5 Pane In The Glass ($31)
Is one of the real roughies here but John Thompson’s Testa Rossa mare had form in her younger years and with a bit of luck can return to a credible state this time in.
She was Group 1 placed twice as a two-year-old last year but hasn’t run top three in 12 months.
Still the 1500m at Rosehill was when she last did it (2nd to Streama in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes) and that was third-up – which she is again on Saturday – so there’s hope.
Her last two runs read 7th (of 9) to Moment Of Change in the Show County (1200m) and 7th (of 7) to More Joyous in the Sheraco Stakes (1200M) but she gets up in distance for this, and both of those races were won by class types.
